The technology industry wastes billions of dollars every year designing, coding, testing, and maintaining features that serve absolutely no human need. Development teams spend months agonizing over the micro-interactions of a tool that users would gladly trade for a simple spreadsheet. We suffer from a severe addition bias: we assume the solution to any usability problem is to add more UI.

The most expensive mistake a software company can make is to write code for a feature that nobody wants. The second most expensive mistake is to bury a critically important feature beneath layers of convoluted navigation.

Standard usability testing will tell you if a user can navigate your interface. A deprivation study tells you if they should. It forces a stark confrontation with the truth of your product’s utility.
