AI is not just a better chat box. It changes the user’s role from operator to supervisor, which forces UX to move from command-based interaction toward intent-based delegation, new usability metrics, orchestration layers, calibrated friction, and ultimately exploration-based interaction to clarify the user’s needs.
Putting the intent layer above orchestration seems so obvious. But some folks think of it as baked into agent instructions or even tool calls. This is already failing in more complex situations involving multiple agents.
There’s enormous need for design to clarify and reify the top layer, perhaps as the place where missions are defined with goals, budgets, constraints — but not with specific steps or methods: Intent clothed in the specifics that steer outcomes within constraints and prevent chaos, perhaps?
This is not prompting.
It’s a new domain for which experiences either will be designed or cobbled together higgledy-piggledy. I call it the mission layer.
A wonderful dissertation, but my instincts tell me that it is very unlikely that anything with this level of complexity will work for most human domains.
Idea of a designer is to make information appealing to humans by aligning human thought process.
Need of humans always shadowed complexity of process. Once the Design for the new age start, it becomes a co-design exercise. Evolution of design will bridge the complexity gap it becomes a question of intention and outcome.
